Mapping Asymmetry. Advancing Justice.

Scalene Institute is a research and policy hub that identifies and remedies structural asymmetries in education and justice. We quantify non‑equivalence across power, resources, risk, and recognition, co‑produce evidence with communities, and translate findings into practice and policy tools that move systems toward equity.

Meet the Founder

Abeer Mirza is a PhD researcher in Social Justice Education at Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, and an educator across K–12 divisions. Her research examines Anti-Muslim racism as a barrier to accessing justice for Muslim children and youth in Ontario, linking lived experience, policy, and institutional practice. As founder of the Scalene Institute, she translates this scholarship into applied methods by identifying structural asymmetries in education and youth justice, and developing clear methods, tools, and guidance for practitioners and policymakers. She is an Ontario Graduate Scholarship recipient and brings combined research, teaching, and community engagement to guide the institute’s work.
